Size & Compatibility

How do you match Flat Keder to your frame channel?

Why nominal strip dimensions are only the starting point for a reliable SEG frame fit.

The solution at a glance

Approve the strip, sewn fabric and channel as one assembly; nominal keder size alone is not a fit specification.

  1. Check the strip dimensions and the actual channel geometry.
  2. Test the sewn edge with the intended fabric.
  3. Fit a complete graphic before approving the specification.

Is the nominal strip size enough to confirm fit?

A flat keder size describes the strip itself. It does not fully describe the opening, depth or internal geometry of a frame channel. Two frames that appear similar may accept the same nominal strip differently. Start with a drawing or a physical channel sample rather than the outside dimensions of the frame.

BIVO lists 12 × 3 mm and 14 × 3 mm as standard options. These are starting points for selection, not a guarantee of fit in every SEG system. Confirm availability for the selected material, particularly when specifying silicone.

  • Identify strip width and thickness separately.
  • Record the channel opening and internal profile.
  • Keep the frame supplier's installation guidance available.

How does the sewn edge affect installation?

The installed edge includes more than the bare strip. Fabric construction, stitching position and the way the fabric wraps around the edge can influence insertion. A bare strip trial can help identify an obvious mismatch, but it should not replace a sewn sample.

Use the production fabric and intended sewing arrangement for evaluation. If several fabrics are offered for the same frame, assess each relevant combination. An approval for one fabric does not automatically cover a heavier, differently coated or differently finished fabric.

Could the graphic size be causing the fit problem?

A graphic that feels too tight is not necessarily fitted with an oversized strip. Finished graphic dimensions and sewing position also affect tension. Before changing the keder, compare the completed graphic with the frame supplier's recommended sizing method and your approved production reference.

Likewise, a loose appearance may come from excess fabric rather than a loose channel fit. Separate the question of whether the edge is retained from the question of whether the fabric face has suitable tension. Changing the strip alone may leave the actual cause unresolved.

How should you test the complete frame?

Follow the frame supplier's installation sequence and use a representative complete graphic where possible. A short straight section cannot reveal every corner or perimeter issue. Do not force a strip into an incompatible channel; stop and inspect the assembly if insertion requires unusual effort.

Record the result at corners and straight sections, plus any visible unevenness after fitting. Photograph the same areas across candidate samples. If the display uses illumination, inspect the fitted graphic under the intended lighting as well as in normal room light.

  • Check that the edge seats consistently.
  • Look for local twisting or corner buildup.
  • Repeat with a second sample if the first result is inconsistent.

How do you keep repeat orders consistent?

Once a combination works, preserve its identifying details. Record material, nominal dimensions, agreed dimensional requirements, fabric, seam position and frame reference. Keep a labeled strip and sewn sample so purchasing and production teams can refer to the same approval.

If a frame, fabric or material changes, review whether the earlier approval still applies. A supplier can discuss custom dimensions, but the target should come from the tested assembly. Share drawings and trial observations to make that discussion more precise and reduce repeated sample rounds.
